World Habitat Day
Thank you to the nearly 200 attendees of this year’s World Habitat Day!
In December of 1985, the United Nations General Assembly declared the first Monday in October to be World Habitat Day in recognition of the basic need for adequate shelter. This year World Habitat Day is October 1st and we will be celebrating with a showing of The Pursuit of Happyness, a film that highlights the true story of a family in need of affordable shelter and a hand up, not a hand out.
About 1.6 billion people live in substandard housing around the world. If no serious action is taken, the number of slum dwellers worldwide will increase over the next 30 years to nearly 2 billion. The purpose of World Habitat Day is to draw attention to this desperate need for adequate housing all across the world. By raising awareness and advocating for universal decent housing, we want to alter the systems that reinforce poverty housing and make decent, affordable shelter a reality for all.
The theme of World Habitat Day 2012 is “Many Homes, One Community.” We believe that together our voices reach much further and allow us to share the message that housing plays a pivotal role in community development. Please join us for this year’s event, a free showing of The Pursuit of Happyness on October 1 at 6pm. You can RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org and we look forward to sharing this special night with members of our community.
