World Habitat Day
UPDATE: Thanks to all who joined us to celebrate World Habitat Day 2011 at the Temecula Community Theater! We look forward to celebrating World Habitat Day 2012 with you!
The theme of World Habitat Day 2011 is “Housing Cities After a Disaster,” a serious and growing problem around the world. From Haiti to Japan, New Orleans to Memphis, urban areas face different and great challenges when responding to disasters. These dangers and challenges require effective and creative policies from governments and humanitarian groups around the world.
Habitat for Humanity will engage in a month-long observance of the need for safe, decent and affordable shelter beginning on World Habitat Day, Monday, October 3, 2011. World Habitat Day is designated each year by the United Nations as a time to reflect on the dire need for adequate shelter around the globe. In recognition of World Habitat Day and the work Habitat for Humanity has done to alleviate poverty housing, Habitat will dedicate its 500,000th house in Maai Mahiu, Kenya, and raise the walls on its 500,001 house in Paterson, New Jersey.
To raise awareness of global poverty issues, Habitat Inland Valley will be hosting a free showing of Slum Dog Millionaire at the Temecula Community Theater on October 4. Please RSVP to elizabeth@habitat4inlandvalley.org.
